Grinding Machines: A Sharp Tool for Precision Machining
2024-03-12
A grinding machine, also known as a grinder or a lapping machine, is a tool commonly used in the field of machining, which serves to grind and process the surface of a workpiece using abrasives. This type of machine tool is used in a wide range of applications, from the manufacture of precision parts to the grinding of tools, all of which cannot be processed without the high precision of a grinder.
Grinding machines utilize a high-speed rotating grinding wheel as a grinding tool, and through the shear deformation generated during the grinding process, small thin slices of the workpiece surface are chipped off, thus achieving the purpose of precision machining. Its basic construction consists of a fixture in which the workpiece is fixed, a grinding wheel that rotates at the desired speed, and a grinding head that controls the position of the wheel. To prevent overheating and improve machining quality, grinders are usually equipped with coolant.
The history of grinding machines dates back thousands of years, through traditional methods with deep historical roots and modern advances brought about by industrial development. This evolution can be summarized as traditional grinding, with its long history, and modern grinding, a product of industrial progress.
In the 20th century, mills were primarily manually operated, resulting in lower precision. However, with the rapid advancement of microcomputer technology in the 21st century, the integration of grinder technology with computing power significantly increased the level of accuracy.
By around the 1990s, the development of synthetic abrasives and the use of hydraulic drives gave a major boost to the development of grinders. With the development of modern industry, especially the automobile industry, a variety of different types of grinding machines have been introduced.
With the increased demand for high-precision mechanical parts and the development of precision casting and precision forging processes, the performance, variety and output of grinding machines are constantly improving and increasing. In this day and age, flat polishing and grinding technology has become a grinding technology with development potential. Therefore, the research on ultra-precision grinding, polishing and other technologies will be even more compelling in the future.
